DANGERS OF OTHER ADDITIVES & TREATMENTS IN DRINKING WATERS
Adding Anything to Water Changes its Dynamic Structure:
Philip Ball states in is scientific book about water (see it HERE):
“…the fact is NOTHING can be added to water without shaking up and disturbing its natural exquisite dynamic structure…”
It follows, that in any purification or bottling or storing or transport process, care must be taken not to treat the drinking water in a manner where it negatively changes its own dynamic structure..
To the Hopi Native Indians of arid north west Arizona (USA) water is a defining essence of their culture. Water drawn from springs fed by a vast aquifer have NEVER been taken for granted by the Hopi. The Hopi have the ‘kachina’, a rain dance, designed to “evoke and celebrate the life-giving force of water”.

Here are a few words of caution on those pages --- and we ask our readers who drink Hamilton City water to enquire if any safeguards raised, as being required in the 1993 report we refer to, have been implemented and/or investigated --- prior to the city using this chemical in as part of treatments for Hamilton's drinking waters:
- "The extent of polyelectrolyte (also known as polymers) use in NZ is unknown and furthermore there are no NZ drinking water guidelines covering these diverse additives."
- "As a result the potential health risk associated with this sort of water treatment to the NZ public is unknown."
- "The major limiting factor in controlling residual polyelectrolyte and associated contaminants in the final water is likely to be does rate control."
- "NZ has no regulatory requirements for these chemicals."
- "Acrylamide (a polyacrylamide residual monomer) AND epichlorohydin (an epi-DMA polymer contaminant residual reactant) are recognised as toxic to humans."
- "Chloronated by-products of acrylamide and ozonated by-products of acrylic acid are also toxic."

Water from your taps: Do you know this can have ALUMINIUM added in it’s processed and refined state and that this can also be negative to human and animal health.
Aluminium is added/used in some Auckland Region water refining/treatment processes and in all Hamilton's drinking water refining/treatment.

Cities and towns often add aluminum compounds to water to make solid matter clump and fall to the bottom of holding tanks used at most water treatment plants. While it removes solid matter, some residual aluminum is likely to find it way into the drinking water.
Excessive aluminum is found in most people's tissue mineral tests. High levels are associated with memory impairment and dementia.
Is lime addition possibly toxic?....We suggest you study this question yourself. After all it is your body. We will try not to drink water with lime or any other additive in it.
OTHER pH ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERS
Coral calcium powder is sometimes used.
Lawrence Wilson BSc warns against drinking water with this additive....when he writes:
"White powders added to the water. One must find out exactly what is added. Most is not that pure. Avoid coral calcium powder, for example, or some other contaminated product that adds more toxic metals. They add a calcium solution or powder, often coral calcium, to alkalinize it. Especially if it is made from coral calcium, it may contain toxic metals. When metals are added to reverse osmosis water, the ‘hungry water’ seems to take up the metals easily and drive them deep into the body cells and the kidneys.
If any bottled water, which has been purified using many processes, suggests it's bottled water has a pH of 7 or thereabouts --- then it simply HAS TO HAVE BEEN treated with some additive to improve its pH, from acid to more alkaline. This is because the treatment processes make even a naturally alkaline water more acid. Anyone is entitled to ask what has been added.
REDUCING HARDNESS OF SOME WATERS
It is usual in many metropolitan and urban areas for the water supply authorities to reduce the hardness of the water from their reservoirs so that its aesthetic quality is improved from the raw water resource.
Reducing hardness is a matter of removing some of the calcium and magnesium ions, not all of them, just enough to make the water softer. Since calcium and magnesium rapidly form precipitates with carbonates, adding soda ash (sodium carbonate) to water forms calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate that then settles out as a precipitate. Soda ash is also called 'washing soda' and its use for normal laundry purposes is to reduce the calcium and magnesium effects on soap.
ADDED COPPER OR BROMINE
It seems neither Auckland nor Hamilton add any copper to their drinking water supplies.
For those systems of treatment that do add copper, here are some suggested cautions.
On his web site (L Wilson BSc) reports on copper or bromine:
“City water companies may also add copper and other chemical compounds to reduce the growth of certain harmful algae and molds in reservoirs. While copper is a nutrient mineral, most people have too much of it in their bodies. Vegetarian diets are high in copper. Weak adrenal glands cause copper accumulation. Birth control pills raise copper and copper intra-uterine devices can drastically raise one's copper level.
Copper toxicity is extremely common and can cause depression, anxiety, mood swings, panic attacks, fatigue, headaches, skin rashes and even cancer. Over half the mineral analyses I see reveal elevated levels of tissue copper.”
Waters such as I-Water, Pentawater, Smart Water and others –
Lawrence Wilson BSc writes about these waters:
“These are often made from reverse osmosis water, which does not hydrate the body well. It does not seem to matter what they do to the RO water. It still does not hydrate well.
Most of these waters have added minerals. Not only does this not correct the problems of reverse osmosis, but the minerals will often unbalance the body, if they are even absorbed. These waters are overpriced, do not hydrate the body well, and so far none that I have seen are nearly as healthful as a good quality spring water or even plain tap water.”
ADDED OXYGEN/OXYGENISATION of BOTTLED WATER
Some people are adding ‘super oxygen’ in the process of bottling water. This is under considerable controversy
These processes are themselves subject of much dispute (by example refer to web site: http://www.aquatechnology.net/frame86001.html ) and a caution to bonding oxygen of various types into water, or altering the natural structure or memory of water with synthetic additives/processes. Look:
- There is considerable controversy surrounding the usefulness, and safety (to the body) when oxygen is taken via water or beverages.
- There is considerable controversy around the various methodologies being used to place oxygen in water and "stabilize" it for long periods of time/shelf-life.
- An April 1998 report in Georgia Institute of Technology's Sports Medicine Newsletter by Dr. Jim M. Brown claimed that: "a gullible audience is falling for super-oxygenated water beverages" and "... the claims for super-oxygenated water have never been subject to peer review, publication in scientific journals and are a case of pure fraud without a physiologic foundation".
- The American Council on Exercise(ACE: www.acefitness.org) commissioned a study of super-oxygenated waters which promised higher energy, greater mental awareness and concentation and other claims. The study reported in the Associated Press on October 8, 2001 and originally reported by Sports Medicine in its September 12, 2001 issue found"... that drinking superoxygenated water had no measurable effect on the subjects' resting heart rate, blood pressure or blood lactate values".
- The study, led by Dr. John Porcari at the University of Wisconsin concluded by stating tha: "...at this time, there is no scientific evidence or logical rationale to suggest that drinking super oxygenated water can in any way increase the amount of oxygen in the blood stream".
- Oxygenated water would not retain much oxygen for any length of time if oxygen was simply being pumped into the water at high pressures and low temperatures. Upon opening the bottle, the oxygen escaped to the air and never had a chance of entering the bloodstream.
- Two separate ways to produce oxygenated water beverages include by using a syntheticbonding process or by using a natural bonding process.
Ozone is a treatment process used to purify drinking water --- again killing all bacteria, good and bad.
Ozone can remove bad tastes and odors in water; and it kills e. coli (and all other life ?) in water. The Netherlands began using ozone for treating drinking water in 1893. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved the use of ozone as a water treatment solution in the United States.

Some of the concerns included on that web site:
- The water used to make ozonated water should be filtered, not R.O., distilled, or tap water
- Drink ozonated water within 10 minutes, since ozone will lose its strength and effectiveness after that
- The container that the ozone will be bubbled into must be made of glass. Ozone will cause plastic to be dissolved into the waterr
- Ozonated distilled water irritates nasal membranes when used as a nasal rinse.
- One commentator: I have been living in a place were the water is ozonated. The benefits: it kills bacteria nearly 100% so less infections, but the overall side effects after 10 years: weight gain, tiredness, joint problems. Such a water does not exist normally in nature (except after violent storms /lightening). Avoid drinking it. It will make you artificially hungry.
- How do we know for sure that the ozone in drinking water (if any is left in at time of drinking... as others say it does not remain in bottled drinking water) does not harm healthy cells?
- The pros and cons of ozonated drinking water are highly controversial. Some people have argued that drinking ozonated water has no proven scientific benefits and may even be unhealthy. Others believe that ozone has significant healing properties.
In the alternative some people are positive about the use of ozonated water and/or using ozone to treat some ailments. It is useful to visit the above web site to also read all the positive testimonials set out there. But overall the jury still seems to be out.
It may well be that the process of ozonating water for purification purposes result in no ozone being left in the water at time of drinking; but is there science or other practical studies to prove this, and also to prove it has had no negative affect on the structure, energy or life of the water?
Ozone is present in the highest parts of Earth's stratosphere, and it protects the Earth's surface from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet light.
While ozone (as O3, is made of three oxygen molecules) is a natural gas in earth's upper atmosphere, it is considered to be dangerous to breathe in large quantities. Ozone can cause shortness of breath, coughing and lung damage. In fact, even in low concentrations ozone can irritate lungs and can even be toxic. Longer exposure to ozone puts someone at risk of ozone poisoning, lung cancer, lung scarring and even death. The USA's FDA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the EPA have each set standards for how much O3 is safe to inhale. These range between 0.05ppm. – 0.10ppm.
Ozone generators are designed to neutralize odors in homes, cars, office buildings, hotels and other enclosed places. Generators disperse ozone that penetrates every nook and cranny including carpets, walls, window treatments and light fixtures. Ozone generators kill bacteria and other microbes that cause odors. This includes tough smells such as smoke, mildew and skunk. Despite the benefits, ozone generators come with a large health risk. Most home ozone generators output ozone in quantities several times the established safety amounts. Because of this, the EPA strongly urges against the use ozone generators. This web site has serious warnings about using an ozone air purifier.
The process of ozonation of water might not be associated with these just stated ozone generator-purifier dangers.
Some other ozone is also said to be dangerous. Ozone found in the troposphere, or at ground level, is man-made and dangerous. Ozone pollution is caused by combustion. Combustion occurs in engines and power plants. Exhaust and emissions released into the air as chemicals combine to generate power. These particles combine with oxygen to create a harmful ozone.
ULTRA-VIOLET ( UV) TREATMENT
This treatment involves a radiation of the water with ultra violet (UV) light.
The UV spectrum is higher in frequency than visible light and lower than x-rays. As a water treatment technique, UV is known to be an effective disinfectant due to its strong germicidal (inactivating) ability. UV disinfects water, by altering the DNA and killing each of bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
It may be a concern, in as much as:
- water seeks to hide from light in its natural state
- it kills all microbiological life/bacteria, both good and bad. We should near always seek to retain the good, including in our alive water
- it involves the water being sent through a man-made appliance, which might hurt the structure or energy or life of the water
- radiating the water may in its own way change its structure or energy or life; as would radiating a person who is about 70% water.
The typical UV treatment device consists, of a cylindrical chamber housing the UV bulb along its central axis. A quartz glass sleeve encases the bulb; water flow is parallel to the bulb, which requires electrical power. A flow control device prevents the water from passing too quickly past the bulb, assuring appropriate radiation contact time with the flowing water. It has been reported that turbulent (agitated) water flow provides more complete exposure of the organism to UV radiation.
A UV system housing should be made of stainless steel to protect any electronic parts from corrosion. To assure they will be contaminant-free, all welds in the system should be plasma-fused and purged with argon gas.
The other major differences in UV treatment units are in capacity and optional features. Some are equipped with UV emission detectors that warn the user when the unit needs cleaning or when the light source is failing. This feature is extremely important to assurance of a safe water supply. A detector that emits a sound or shuts off the water flow is preferable to a warning light, especially if the system might be located where a warning light would not be noticed immediately.
There are specific water quality parameters that must be met for the UV system to produce adequate amounts of bacteriological safe water. In addition, adherence to a regular maintenance routine and lamp replacement are each essential.
MEDICAL DRUGS IN THE TAP WATER
"Today, most city water also contains residues of many medical drugs that do not break down fast enough and are recycled in the water supply.
This is a complete horror that has not received nearly the publicity it deserves. Most medical drugs including many antibiotics, heart medicines, birth control pills, and hundreds of others pass right through the body unaltered. They do not biodegrade quickly, and are literally recycled in many communities and go back into the drinking water. "

MICROORGANISMS IN DRINKING WATERS
To understand the microorganisms’ which might be in water, and their possible effect of on human life, we need to first understand that humans have developed over 2 million years a co-operative relationship with some microorganisms. Such micro organisms which humans happily and healthily co-operate with now colonize the human insides/gut and skin.
About 3.5 billion years ago some micro-organism populated earth’s oceans. The microorganisms developed, as life does, and their development can be generally classified as being:
Primitive micro-organisms: Called Archaea (ancient life). These were initially small single cell organisms.
Pro Karyotes (early Nucleus). These were a later micro-organism development. These are today considered to be the most primitive form of single-celled organisms, and are now called Bacteria.
Eukaryotes (true Nucleii). These developed around a similar time to Pro Karyote, being two different types of Pro Karyote micro-organism which combined into one symbiotic ‘package’, with more complex cellular architecture. These have cells compartmentalized, like the rooms of a house.
Later, about 1.5 billion years ago, these Eukaryotes would begin to combine into multi-cellular organism; and about 2million years ago we humans become one such development, perhaps being able to be fairly described as a major organism composed of many micro organisms.
These multicellular organisms developed ways of interacting with their environment and fellow life forms. They also killed and ate some of the single cell micro-organisms. As a defence, some of the single cell micro-organisms learned how to parasites to some of the multicellular or macro organisms.
Over a number of millennia some interaction between the differing life forms became synergistic, some becoming co-operative. As time passed more and more organisms co-operated to mutual benefit, performing useful functions for or on each other.
When the first ‘homo ‘species arrived on the earth scene, micro and macro organism interaction was well established.
As a result of the above developments many interactions today between humans and micro organisms are synergistic. As an example large numbers (billions if not trillions per person) of bacteria live on our outer skin and in our inside biological system. Temporary colonization on/in humans by microorganisms which do not harm us are not injurious to our health. Infectious microorganisms on the other hand (e.g. some parasites and some protozoa and some viruses) can gain entry to our body AND begin to grow (as compared to negative invaders being killed by our own immune system and /or by our positive bacteria/normal fauna). When the negative invaders displace our normal protective fauna, then this can manifest illness in humans. Such infections from ‘negative’ micororganisms can come to people from food, from people baking or serving food, from some containers food or water is delivered in. It is not ‘just’ a water matter, but water needs to be carefully tested to determine if negative microorganisms are in such water at any level of risk to any human who might drink that water.
When considering water microorganism we should divide this subject into co-operative/synergistic micro-organisms, and those which to humans remain either parasites or micororganisms which can cause human infection, disease/illness.
Water can be a easy host for many microorganisms, primarily when it is dirty or otherwise polluted. The most alarming source of negative /parasitic /dangerous microorganisms in water arise when the water has been in contact within recent time periods with human or animal or bird fecal matter. Surface soil might also harbor such contaminants. Sewerage obviously does. Some of the dangerous organisms include cryptosporidium, some forms of E-coli (although some E-coli is also naturally located these days inside humans).V Cholerae is dangerous, and are those organisms causing typhoid and other human illnesses. Molds and fungi can also become dangerous micro additives to our drinking water.
Guardia is a nasty parasite which can be found in many stream and river water, but it is not able to live in the upward quick moving springs, to the point where springs come to the surface of earth. However where the springs come to earth, the spring should be protected from water borne parasites.
The microbiological safety of water is therefore best achieved by developing a balanced approach. It is not positive to overall health to seek or produce sterile water. If sterile water as a requirement to sustain human life, then the human race would have died out eons ago.
REFINEMENT & TREATMENT OF OTHERWISE CLEAN BORE & SPRING WATERS
One needs to be aware and cautious that once any water is subjected to a process of refinement/treatment, then its natural minerals may all be deleted, and/or its structure and pH might be altered. If someone states on bottled water an certain analysis --- everyone is entitled to ask if this analysis was registered before or after the treatment of the water. The analysis on the label might no longer exist in the water in the bottle!
