History Of Heartland Springs

1. This particular water source is a natural spring which has been flowing to the ground surface by itself (without assistance from bore or pumps) for what is said by oral stories/tradition to have been hundreds if not thousands of years.

Local oral stories suggest this same spring water was a source of wai ora (water of life - used for drinking , healing and cleansing) for each of the Waitaha inhabitants of this area (about 0 AD to about 1200 AD) AND later for Maori inhabitants of this area.

2. European oral stories suggest that this same spring was used as a watering spot by and for travelers when they moved cattle from Auckland to Thames/Tauranga and also in the early days of motor vehicle transport, when the early cars had made the trip over the Bombays, and both cars and human occupants needed more water to enable the on-going vehicular journey south or east.

There is evidence this same spring was used by British military as their drinking water source during the Maori wars.

3.   What is known is that those living on the property where the spring surfaces have relied on this spring for at least since the time when the present homestead on the property was constructed around 1871.

4.    The spring is located on private property, in the near centre of existing legal titles. The present land owner where the spring is located is the Pokeno Farm Family Trust. The Pokeno Farm Family Trust and/or those associated with this trust (the Phillips family), have been this property owner since around 1986, being around 28 years.

5. When they purchased this property around 1986, one aspect of the property then promoted was the spring surfacing to the ground surface, and the high quality and high volume of spring water flow. Around 1986 the prior owners told the new owner (the Phillips family) that this spring had been used for most water uses on this farm property for as long as they had owned the farm, and they said they were aware of its use by many owners prior to them.

Thus there is a long-standing use right of this spring water by owners of this farm property. The owner is told that this historical take and use right is now protected by NZ legislation.

6. By example of the recognition of this particular spring and its use, it was specifically referred to in a registered valuation of the property on which it is located, as was completed by registered valuer Max G Adams around 27 November 2001, when he wrote on page 3 of his valuation report:

“ ……The spring water is a feature of this property, having been tested for age and purity. It has a flow rate of 12 litres per second and provides sufficient water for domestic, livestock and horticultural use…”

The spring was tested as to its flow rate in the 1990’s, when persons took a large water pump and put it into the well, and ran it at the rate required to keep the well empty of spring water. This testing as to spring water flow was completed in summer months and revealed a high and constant spring water flow rate.

7    The water quality tests referred to in the 2001 valuation report were taken in 1996 and 1998. Updated tests have been completed on a more extensive basis in 2014 and 2015. The significant findings about the analysis/constitution of this particular spring water include:

  • ·         It is free from pollutants from surrounding ground surfaces; and
  • ·         It is relatively high in natural silica, some say the most needed element after oxygen for on-going human and animal health; and
  • ·         It has a balance of calcium and magnesium, which is how these 2 elements are meant to be introduced into the human body, in balance; and
  • ·         It is still water with what is termed as a low mineralization spring water: thereby being water which (subject to no pollutants) can safely be applied for everyday use; and
  • ·         It qualifies as a low mineral water, in terms of the European Union (EU) mineral water standards.
  • ·         It has a pH of around 7.2 to 7.8, which is very close to the human blood ph of around 7.35, being usefully slightly alkaline.

8. The history of the Mount William-Pokeno aquifer, from which this spring is fed, is subject to some debate, but some of the debate was put to rest around 1999 when the large NZ corporate ‘Winstones’ (part of Fletcher Building) did research and testing and determined the aquifer was large and was perhaps about a 10,000 year old aquifer deep below the base of Mount William. 

9.    (a) The present occupants of this property have been drinking this specific spring water in its natural untreated state for over 20 years, with no known negative side effects.

       (b) All animals (including valuable horse bloodstock) bred and reared on this same property have been drinking this specific spring water in its natural untreated state for some 27 years, with no known negative side effects. Indeed many horses bred on this property and reared on this natural spring water, have gone on to become top class racehorses.

10. Heartland Farm and Homestead Water Uses - The long standing use involves pumping spring water from the protective well surrounding the spring surface flow, to positions/uses around the farm property, using a pump which can pump at times (depending on the PSI pressure tank setting) at the rate of about 0.55 litres per second or about 2 CM per hour or about 24 CM (about 24,000 litres) per 24 hour day.

Since the above earlier pictures were taken, major careful development have been completed to increase the protection of the spring source and to provide spring water which cannot be affected by the environment on earth's surface. More native plantings in the spring area have created a forest feel to this sacred area of the farm. See more recent pictures which now follow those historical pictures on this page.


11. All water bodies on the farm property where this spring is located are fenced from stock.

As shown by these recent pics, the one above and the two which follow, the main spring outlet is sealed by a concrete well, which is attached at ground level to solid rock. The water naturally enters the land through natural crevices in the solid rock foundation.

These three pictures show the more solid and complex protective well created around the main spring source, re-built as a prelude to selling this spring water. This new well structure is designed to withstand 100 year flash floods, and will be locked and sealed from outside influences. The new native plantings can also be seen in these new pictures.

12. We also have 3 reserve water wells, these encasing and protecting 3 spring water flows in the same sacred area of this farm. This is a picture of these 3 'reserve' protected springs. At this time we do not intend to use the spring water flowing every second from these three additional spring sources.

The spring water from the main protected spring is now being piped to the back gate stainless steel holding tank for future sale. It is flowing using gravity, not using pump pressure. This completely natural gravity spring flow can  be accessed by those seeking spring water that has never been pumped...but they need to buy this water from our back gate at the farm. A small pump is also to be connected to our back gate s/s tank, to provide an alternative quick-fill option at the farm back gate. This is also where our licensees will collect their fresh spring water for daily delivery to homes and offices.  

This s/s holding tank overflows most of the time, so the water in it is moving/alive.
